On the 777th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone, this special jersey celebrates Cologne Cathedral not only as an architectural masterpiece, but also as a symbol of the city's history and faith, which continues to attract and inspire millions of people today. The laying of the foundation stone of Cologne Cathedral on August 15, 1248, marks a pivotal moment in the history of the city and ecclesiastical architecture.
Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden laid the foundation stone for the cathedral project to house the relics of the Three Kings. However, construction dragged on for centuries. After 1520, work came to a halt. Only in the 19th century, with the rediscovery of Gothic architecture and the Industrial Revolution bringing new technological possibilities and financial resources, did construction resume in full force. The Prussian King Frederick William IV, who declared the completion of the cathedral a national task, laid the foundation stone for the completion of the cathedral in 1842. In 1880, 632 years after the laying of the foundation stone, Cologne Cathedral was finally completed in its present form.
